Christmas Present

Image
It was no ordinary present. I could see that from the effort that had  gone in to wrapping it in gold paper and the stern injunction, “Do not open until Christmas Day.”     We were not a great family for presents. My mother's favourite saying was “It's not the present, it's the thought.”     To be honest, her presents did not show much thought either. One year I got a toothbrush. And that was a good year. Sometimes children got no presents because Santa had us on his “nasty list”, after consulting mum  obviously.     My dad had died suddenly in June and the only present I really wanted, well it wasn't worth mentioning was it? I certainly wasn't going to get him back.     I could tell it was a book. I enjoyed reading and treated books as a means of escape. I enjoyed stories about King Arthur or outer space. As far away from home as possible in other words.     And when I opened it, I realised that a lot of thought had gone into this present. It was the orig

“Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow”

Image
by Liz Tait She's seen me. She's smiling. It costs nothing. “ Hi Jo, long time no see! Have you just had your hair done in there, naughty girl?!” Her Pashmina’s whipping me in the wind. I had no idea they were still a thing. I’m babbling, she’s circling. “ Er, yes, just, I just..... spur of the moment, you know how it is". Any minute now she's going to lift my chin up like a Crufts judge. "You’ve had the colour done as well, haven't you? Bloody lucky to get an appointment there on the ‘spur of the moment’. For all that!" I could leg it but she's all over my exit routes. “ You know I’d have given you a call first, obviously, because you…, I mean, you’ve always been my, you always do my hair, don’t you, but you don’t work Wednesdays, so….?” My pants are well and truly on fire. Her indignation warms the back of my neck. “ I do! I’ve always worked Wednesdays. Hey, it doesn’t matter, does it? You can get your hair done where

The Sunset

Image
Meghashri Dalvi Doug stared ahead as the sun blistered through the tall tattered towers. A hot breeze hit the abandoned cars and whirled up garbage from the sidewalks. He moved a little. The small rundown shop with broken doors was good enough. From there, the sun looked perfectly positioned between the two crumbling skyscrapers. It would be fun watching it go down this narrow path. He remembered that as the sun sets here in the New York city, it rises somewhere half the world away. Would that place also be falling apart? And would there also be someone watching the sunrise? Alive? Alone? Like him?

Rose Petals on Seacliff Pier

Image
Rose Petals on Seacliff Pier By Linda S. Gunther It’s late afternoon here at the beach on the Seacliff pier. Fallen red rose petals are wrinkled, edges frayed, darkened, likely stomped on by couples in love, mothers pushing squeaky baby strollers, children running wildly to catch the seagulls, dogs on leashes savoring the fresh air, fishermen eager to snag the best spot possible, zig-zagging skateboarders trying out new tricks. All those feet and wheels trod on these red rose petals strewn for several feet down the knotted, weathered wooden slats of the long pier. I think about whether there were tears of joy or sorrow shed here today. Was it a wedding or memorial service that took place? The rose petals left behind look the same no matter the event. Images trail across my mind. A grieving widow. A beaming bride. A flower girl. An old man who lost his wife, the love of his life. I’ve been to numerous events on this pier over the years. This place, also the home o
